Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Announces 2012 Summer Season

Baltimore Symphony at Oregon Ridge

Baltimore, Md. (PRWEB) March 30, 2012

The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra announces its programming for the Summer 2012 concert season. The season begins with Baltimore’s favorite Fourth of July tradition: The Star-Spangled Spectacular at Oregon Ridge Park (Cockeysville, Md.) on July 3 & 4, featuring favorite patriotic music that culminates in a fireworks display. Also at Oregon Ridge on July 14, the BSO will perform Star Wars and Beyond!, celebrating John Williams’ iconic music that accompanied the popular film franchise and other popular film scores, including Batman and Pirates of the Caribbean. This summer, the BSO returns to Pier Six Pavilion (Baltimore’s Inner Harbor) to perform a musical tribute to Michael Jackson on July 26 and the BSO joins a full rock band to perform the music of Led Zeppelin on July 27. At the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, the BSO will perform A Night in Fantasia on July 28, featuring selections from popular video games and anime, with images from the games projected on screens above the orchestra. This concert is produced in collaboration with Baltimore’s annual Otakon Convention, a 3-day festival devoted to Asian pop culture and a destination for more than 25,000 people to Baltimore each summer.

The BSO will also perform as part of Longwood Gardens’ summer line-up on Wednesday, July 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the Gardens’ historic Open Air Theatre. Located near Kennett Square, Pa., just outside of the Philadelphia metro region, Longwood is one of the world’s exquisite gardens. It offers more than 1,000 acres of gardens, woodlands and meadows. The BSO’s program will be led by concertmaster Jonathan Carney and features a full orchestral arrangement of Mendelssohn’s Octet in E flat Major (arranged by Yoon Jae Lee). Also on the program are Elgar’s Serenade for Strings and J.S. Bach’s Second Violin Concerto.

The BSO has also been invited as the resident orchestra for the 2012 William Kapell International Piano Competition & Festival’s finals on Saturday, July 21, 2012 at 8 p.m. Hosted by The University of Maryland at College Park, this week-long festival includes recitals and masterclasses featuring the world’s leading pianists. The festival culminates in a concert featuring the three finalists, performing a concerto with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of David Lockington.

BSO AT OREGON RIDGE PARK

For more than 30 years, the BSO at Oregon Ridge Park has been a Baltimore-area summer tradition, drawing approximately 15,000 patrons annually for family fun, music and fireworks in the wooded enclaves of this Cockeysville park. Gates open at 5 p.m. and local vendors will be onsite selling barbeque and picnic food options. A variety of soft drinks, water, beer and wine will also be available for purchase. Concertgoers are invited to bring lawn chairs, blankets and picnics for a full evening of entertainment with the BSO. Each concert begins at 8 p.m. and concludes with a fireworks display. Editor’s Note: Glass bottles are not permitted in the Park.

The festivities kick off Tuesday, July 3 and Wednesday, July 4 at 8 p.m. with the annual Star-Spangled Spectacular, an all-American salute to the nation’s founding. Conductor Robert Franz will lead the BSO and bass-baritone Derrick Parker in a patriotic celebration that includes Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture, Sousa’s Stars and Stripes Forever, among other works, and musical salutes to our armed forces, culminating in a fireworks display. Each concert will begin with the national anthem, led by the winner(s) of the BSO’s fifth annual “Oh, Say Can You Sing?” singing competition. Please see below for complete contest details.

Robert Bernhardt will lead the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in Star Wars and Beyond! on Saturday, July 14 at 8 p.m. Intended for the entire family, Star Wars enthusiasts of all ages can relive the explosive music of one of the biggest film franchises of the 20th century. John Williams’ score to the iconic Star Wars movies as well as music from other popular films such as the Batman and Bond films and classics like Breakfast at Tiffany’s, will be choreographed to a laser light show and fireworks.

Find Me Gluten Free App Connects Users with Gluten-Free Friendly Restaurants and Businesses Nationwide

Find Me Gluten Free

Austin, Texas (PRWEB) April 05, 2012

Find Me Gluten Free App Connects Users with Gluten-Free

Friendly Restaurants and Businesses Nationwide

Free app offers solution to finding gluten-free friendly businesses and

shared dining experiences in the palm of a user’s hand

Find Me Gluten Free, the most downloaded gluten-free restaurant and business finder app for iPhone and Android, today announced the launch of their newly designed apps and website, http://www.findmeglutenfree.com. Both were created to provide a solution to those with Celiac Disease or a gluten-intolerance, as well as for friends, family or anyone consistently influenced by a gluten-free eater. The app offers the ease of finding gluten-free friendly restaurants, products and businesses, while connecting all users with safe dining options throughout the United States and Canada.

Unlike other restaurant review sites, all ratings and reviews through Find Me Gluten Free are based on how gluten-free friendly the businesses are, making it easier to find a restaurant which users can be confident will take preparing a gluten-free meal seriously, along with serving as a brand-finder at stores nationwide. Find Me Gluten Free provides a solution not only for the gluten-free community, but the friends, family, co-workers, etc. who dine with gluten-free consumers.

“As a software developer who is also a Celiac, I felt compelled to provide a solution that would help other gluten-intolerant eaters navigate their way to healthy foods, while offering a fun and vital tool that is easy to use and share with the entire gluten-free community and beyond,” says Jason Elmore, CEO and Founder of Find Me Gluten Free. Elmore also noted, “when choosing a place to eat with friends or co-workers, I usually have the final say on where to dine, given my gluten intolerance, though it’s always nice to have everyone looking for restaurants on the app to find a location that appeals to all parties.”

The Find Me Gluten Free app and website provides gluten-free eaters and consumers the ability to “Suggest a Business” via their own user profile, then submit and rate (with one to five stars) their individual dining experience or product(s) purchased. Users can locate gluten-free friendly businesses (within their specified radius) by searching “Near Me, or Near Addresses” which will pull up reviewed businesses with other user ratings, reviews, tips and comments, guiding the user to a safe dining experience. The app also delivers a thorough list of “Chain Menus” – everything from Applebee’s to P.F. Chang’s to Qdoba – linked directly to the establishment’s website and/or specified gluten-free menu.

Those with Celiac Disease or a gluten-intolerance cannot digest gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye and barley. Three million Americans have Celiac Disease, and the Center for Celiac Disease in Maryland reported one out of seven people will have a gluten intolerance in their lifetime. The gluten-free food market has exploded as more and more people are diagnosed with gluten allergies and Celiac Disease.

“The Find Me Gluten Free app is the industry leader and great example of the apps out there that are contributing to the growth of the gluten-free food sector and, importantly, the empowerment of the individual who suffers with the sensitivity/intolerance,” said David Browne, Senior Analyst Mintel Int’l Group.

With the flourishing gluten-free food market and need for ever-increasing awareness through a variety of mediums, Find Me Gluten Free has quickly been recognized throughout the gluten-free industry as a prominent partner, through their efforts to raise awareness of Celiac Disease and gluten-intolerance, and are available for further exploration of B2C and B2B partnership opportunities throughout the gluten-free/ restaurant industries. From mobile loyalty programs to promotional codes, Find Me Gluten Free delivers a great solution to reaching a large group of gluten-free consumers.

Find Me Gluten Free established partnerships already in place:

Governor Martin O’malley Announces $ 84 Million In Investment For Maryland’s Innovation Economy

Annapolis, MD (PRWEB) March 15, 2012

Governor Martin O’Malley and Peter Greenleaf, chairman of the Maryland Venture Fund Authority, today announced that $ 84 million has been raised for Maryland’s Innovation Economy through InvestMaryland – an historic initiative created by the Governor and passed by the General Assembly last year to invest in the State’s promising start-up and early stage companies. The $ 84 million raised far exceeds a goal of $ 70 million and was generated through an online auction of premium tax credits to insurance companies with operations in Maryland. While other states have sold tax credits to fund similar venture capital initiatives, Maryland is the first state to use an online auction to raise the capital for such a program. The inaugural round of investments will be made in innovative companies this summer through several private venture capital firms and the State’s successful Maryland Venture Fund (MVF).

“Today, we are pleased to announce that Maryland has taken a significant step forward in generating capital for our businesses and creating jobs,” said Governor O’Malley. “For the first time in our nation’s history, a state has successfully held an online auction to raise funds for a venture capital program and as a result, Maryland will infuse $ 84 million in venture capital into our Innovation Economy to create jobs. Our State is well-positioned to be a leader in the new economy as a global hub of innovation – a leader in science, security, health, discovery and information technology. That’s why last year, together with business leaders from across the State and the General Assembly, we chose to invest in our diverse and highly-educated workforce and the skills and talents of our people for the jobs and opportunity of tomorrow.”

InvestMaryland is the largest venture capital investment in history by the State. The program is being implemented through the Venture Fund Authority and the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED).

“I am thrilled with the auction’s success in not only raising $ 84 million for InvestMaryland in this difficult economic environment, but also by far exceeding our $ 70 million goal. I’d like to thank our many partners in this effort – Grant Street Group, DBED staff, my colleagues on the Maryland Venture Fund Authority and the participating insurance companies for helping to make this auction a success,” said Greenleaf, who is also President of Gaithersburg-based MedImmune. “I now look forward to putting this capital to work by making initial investments this summer to help build new businesses and create jobs in Maryland.”

“Working together with our stakeholders and insurance companies, we were able to raise $ 84 million and far exceed our goal to fuel innovation and entrepreneurship in Maryland,” said Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED) Secretary Christian S. Johansson. “This program brings maximum benefit for taxpayers, helps create the jobs and companies of tomorrow and builds an economic climate where the most promising ideas and innovations have a chance to mature.”

Today’s online auction attracted more than two dozen insurance companies with operations in Maryland, who bid on the tax credits with a floor of $ .70 on the dollar. The 11 companies awarded the credits are Agency Insurance, Chubb, GEICO, Hartford Insurance, IWIF, Med Mutual, Met Life, NY York Life, Selective and Traveler’s. Insurance companies can claim tax credits beginning in 2015.

“GEICO is pleased to work with the State on the InvestMaryland program and participate in today’s successful tax credit auction,” said Mike Campbell, Chief Financial Officer of Maryland-based GEICO. “Our company is in full support of the positive impact that InvestMaryland will have on companies throughout Maryland in terms of job creation, stimulating private investment and moving our Innovation Economy forward.”

Key tenets of InvestMaryland, Governor O’Malley’s signature economic development proposal last year, have been implemented over the past nine months. In August, the Governor named the Venture Fund Authority, a nine-member panel that oversees the administration and operation of the program. Earlier this year, the Authority selected Grant Street Group to prepare for and run the tax credit auction and also recently selected Altius Associates, a London-based firm, to oversee the selection of three to four private venture firms to invest the InvestMaryland funds.

The private venture firms will be responsible for investing two-thirds of the funds, which will return 100 percent of the principal and 80 percent of the profits to the State’s general fund. The remaining 33 percent will be invested by 17-year-old Maryland Venture Fund (MVF). Over its life, the MVF has invested $ 25 million into hundreds of start-up and early stage technology and life sciences companies, generating a $ 61 million return, 2,000 jobs and more than $ 1 billion in private investment. The Maryland Small Business Development Financing Authority (MSBDFA) will also receive a portion of funds for investment. Returns on the funds invested through the MVF will be reinvested in the program.

Among its benefits, InvestMaryland has the potential to create thousands of jobs in Innovation Economy sectors – life sciences and biotechnology, cyber security/IT and clean/green tech and attract billions of follow on capital. It mirrors many aspects of a federal program to accelerate high-growth entrepreneurship nationwide, The Startup America Partnership, which President Barack Obama launched year.

The program is one of a number of initiatives Governor O’Malley has introduced to spur innovation and entrepreneurship in Maryland. Earlier this year, the Governor announced a legislative proposal to create the Maryland Innovation Initiative, an historic partnership between the State and its research universities to advance cutting-edge research to the commercial marketplace.

Maryland has an outstanding infrastructure to support an Innovation Economy. The Milken Institute ranks Maryland #2 in the nation for technology and science assets. According to study results, while Maryland received high rankings in human capital investment, research and development inputs, technology and science workforce, and technology concentration and dynamism, it lagged behind other states in risk capital and entrepreneurial infrastructure, demonstrating the need for InvestMaryland and other programs. The Index provides measurements of the technology and science assets for states, ranking them on their ability to foster and sustain a technology sector, which research has shown is a crucial factor in determining a region’s future economic success.

Beach House

Beach House
Event on 2012-07-23 18:00:00

Tickets on sale Friday, March 16 at Noon, in advance / day of show.

The Beach House you're about to meet isn't the same you may remember from before. Lives have been shuffled, tangled and re-aligned.

When Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally returned home to Baltimore last Winter, they were worn thin from touring and travel. But deep inside them hot energies were incubating, ideas they had been whispering back and forth in the wake of their sophomore full-length, 2008's Devotion. By the following spring they began handing themselves over completely to those impulses, holing themselves up and exchanging ideas in a new, secluded practice space for dangerously long periods of time. As the songs that would become Teen Dream began to live, breathe and take shape, the duo was forced to leave much of their personal lives behind them. 'We're the same people, but this record has changed our directions,' Legrand muses. 'We were forced to let go of people and things we were holding onto as individuals: normalcy, daily rituals, the ability to take care of ourselves. We were dropped into a wilderness, but we had more clarity than we've ever had before.'

Still driven to avoid distraction, the two marched further into isolation, to bottle up all those wild visions away from home. They packed up their lives and settled into a converted church in upstate New York with producer Chris Coady. For a month they continued the birthing process, sweating and pushing out sounds inside a cocoon of their very own weaving. 'It wasn't about arriving at a church and it revolutionizing a feeling,' Scally notes. 'It was a continuation of what we were doing without disruption. Whenever something good happens, we look at each other and we know that was it. It's instinctual and it's private.' Through the course of a month, they chased down songs and dark rushes, the creative telepathy that Scally and Legrand share together taking a strangely physical hold. 'There's a different level of intimacy, a physicality on Teen Dream,' Legrand explains, pacing back and forth. 'Rhythmically, there's new motion. This record touches you. On your chest.'

The skyward pulse of 'Walk In the Park' and '10 Mile Stereo' elicit just those reactions, two vibrant, volcanic examples of a record and band bursting at its incandescent seams. It is without question, more expansive and moving than anything they have shared before. 'I'm ready to give it away,' Legrand says of this, their first effort as part of the Sub Pop family. 'I'm done holding onto it. I want to give it away, I want it to become something else for people. It is born now. '

Alex Scally and Victoria Legrand are from Baltimore, Maryland. They are not a couple and Teen Dream is their third full-length album.

Go to Assateague State Park and Assateague Island Nat’l Seashore just 5 miles south of Ocean City. See the wild ponies, beautiful beaches, wildlife. Berlin, 5 miles east, is a typical old eastern shore town, picturesque with some nice shops. The north end of Ocean City is quieter and cheeper than the south end, especially for eating. Try the Greek place at about 89th street on the west side of the street.

Question by Amy: I am visiting Maryland and would like to stay at the eastern shore.?
Are there any bed and breakfast places or inns that are worth staying at? Also, I am traveling with tow daughters, one is a teen who doesnt mind the quiet, and the other likes excitement and good food. I am happy if they are. What kinds of things does Maryland offer for these two?

Ocean City is the only place in Maryland on the Atlantic. Concentrate on that area. The place has a nice boardwalk, good beaches & all 3 of you should have no trouble finding things to do.

Hosted jointly by the Library of Congress and the Jung Society of Washington, the symposium is free and open to the public. Advanced registration is required at jungsymp@loc.gov.

“Jung and Aging” will be moderated by Aryeh Maidenbaum, a Jungian analyst and director of the New York Center for Jungian Studies. Dr. Lionel Corbett, a faculty member at Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara, Calif., will deliver the plenary address in which he will discuss Jungian contributions to psychological development in later life. Two panels of experts will discuss the psychological and gerontological applications of these contributions. A third panel will address the role of spirituality in the second half of life.

This is the second Library of Congress symposium about Jung. The first was held in conjunction with the exhibition, “The Red Book of Carl G. Jung: Its Origins and Influence,” which was on display at the Library June 17-Sept. 25, 2010. The exhibition, which may be viewed online at http://myloc.gov/exhibitions/redbook/, featured Jung’s famous “Red Book.” The 205-page illustrated manuscript—in the author’s own hand—records the creation of the seminal theories that Jung developed after his 1913 split with Sigmund Freud, and explores its place in Jung’s work through related items from the Library’s collections. The Jung symposium held at the Library on June 19, 2010, may be viewed at www.loc.gov/webcasts
